Azure Monitor and Azure Automation Solutions That Can Replace SCOM and MEM
Description:
Learn about two solutions in a step-by-step manner that (1) deliver server infrastructure monitoring and (2) achieve server OS update management for Azure VMs and Azure Arc servers. Make informed decisions about when, where, and how to replace SCOM and MEM as business and technical opportunities emerge.
  • The monitoring solution encompasses an assembly of Azure microservices that probe and assess the availability, configuration, and performance of a server’s OS. It achieves parity with existing industry-standard tools like SCOM for monitoring core server functions (availability, configuration, and performance). This solution represents a new industry paradigm: suitable, low-cost server monitoring from Azure Monitor delivered via a no-cost cloud service management platform (Azure Arc) that offers infinite scale and global availability.
  • Update Management in Azure Automation is a Microsoft solution to manage OS updates for Windows and Linux virtual machines in Azure, in on-premises environments, and in other cloud environments. With this solution you can quickly assess the status of available updates on one or all agent machines and manage the process of installing required updates for servers. The solution can either run in parallel to any existing updating tools like MEM as an out-of-band check, or completely replace an existing server OS updating solution by performing the update installations. Except for microcharges to log machine status, the Update Management solution with Azure Automation is free of charge.

What you will learn:
  • Achieve a clear understanding of the Azure Resource Manager (ARM) management control plane that delivers monitoring, security, access, and governance using Azure Lighthouse and Azure Policy
  • Deploy a curated set of Azure Monitor rules including detection of the most common alerts from rules and alert-generating monitors contained in the SCOM management packs for Windows Server OS
  • Author an Azure Logic App that reads the update group tags on Azure VMs and Azure Arc servers and writes them to Azure Log Analytics
  • Create Azure Automation scheduled update jobs using PowerShell, one job for each ‘computer group update window’ combination
